MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) - A dozen Troy University students have filed a lawsuit against the school for allegedly terminating an artificial intelligence master’s program, according to court filings.
The 12 students allege that the school “negligently, intentionally, deceptively, and fraudulently, induced” them to enroll in courses in Troy’s Master of Science in Artificial Intelligence program.
The students attended the first orientation for the program on Jan. 15, 2025, and began taking classes on Feb. 5. According to the lawsuit, Troy held “an elaborate announcement and ceremony heralding its presence in the AI world” on its Montgomery campus on April 28.
The complaint, filed Thursday in the Circuit Court of Montgomery County, claims Troy “quietly terminated” the MSAI program in December 2025 and “actively concealed” that termination for several months while the students continued to take classes in pursuit of the degree.
The lawsuit claims Troy notified the students on April 7, 2026, that the degree they came to the school for was not available. The students were told they could continue to study at Troy in another program and “obtain a certificate degree” to be offered online, instead of in-person on campus.
The certificate degree was “a degree which none of the Plaintiffs wanted to participate in nor pursue,” court documents state.
The students say in the filings that the termination of the program has resulted in “significant damage,” including but not limited to “negatively impacting their education, jobs, careers, finances, reputations, and wellbeing.”
The 12 students are seeking compensatory and punitive damages.
