AI-related job postings at major banks including JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, and Capital One surged 49% this year compared with 2025, totaling 139,819 listings, based on data from enterprise hiring analytics firm Draup that was shared with CNBC.

Leading that surge is a set of skills centered on AI agents. Chief among them is agent orchestration — coordinating multiple agents to collaborate on a shared objective — which appeared in job postings 1,721% more often this year, per Draup, whose methodology draws on public listings and platforms such as LinkedIn.

"This is arguably the hottest skill on Wall Street," Draup CEO Vijay Swaminathan told CNBC. "It's a massive opportunity; they need people who understand data and people who understand AI and where to put it."

The hiring trend reflects banks moving past simple chatbot deployments and toward systems built from multiple specialized agents working in sequence — handling tasks such as vetting raw data, reviewing documents, and verifying that outputs satisfy regulatory requirements. Staff in these roles, a group commonly referred to as forward-deployed engineers, must pair engineering proficiency with a practical understanding of the particular business area they serve, whether that is a trading desk, a compliance function, or back-office administration.

Draup's data also shows sharp rises in several supporting technologies: postings mentioning LangGraph, which enables multi-step automated workflows, grew 679%; those citing LlamaIndex, a tool that links AI systems to enterprise data sources, rose 291%; and references to retrieval-augmented generation, which allows models to query internal databases for up-to-date information, were up 259%.

Banks are also building out governance and risk infrastructure alongside their technical hiring. Draup counted a 657% increase in postings referencing "responsible AI," alongside a 394% rise in mentions of AI governance and 359% growth in risk management references. The volume of governance-oriented skill mentions has crossed 16,000 — roughly double the approximately 8,400 postings focused on building, deploying, and maintaining models.

Swaminathan said security teams are focused on preventing third-party tools and external model connections from creating vulnerabilities. "There is a lot of focus on making sure that the third parties that we are using in these products are not going rogue from a cybersecurity standpoint," he told CNBC.

Generative AI managers at banks earn a median base salary of about $190,000, according to Draup. Despite that pay level, filling the roles remains difficult. Major banks are turning to internal reskilling programs to train existing developers and domain experts, Swaminathan said. JPMorgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon has spoken publicly of "huge redeployment plans" as AI assumes more work.
