Trump signs executive order to replace 'artificial intelligence' with 'super intelligence'

WASHINGTON (TNND) — President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed an executive order directing federal agencies to use the term "super intelligence" instead of "artificial intelligence," formalizing a rebranding campaign.

Trump has argued that "artificial" makes the technology sound less capable than it is.

He also said the U.S. has "a very big lead" of other nations, including China.

"We have a very big lead and we're going to keep our lead, and it's a very positive thing. It's an amazing industry," Trump said.

The order requires government documents, public statements, and agency materials to adopt the new terminology, often shortened to "SI.

Ahead of the signing, Trump held a meeting at the White House with leaders from major technology companies, including Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, saying the companies agreed to a voluntary accord involving internal and external reviews of AI systems.

Tech executives have increasingly warned about the potential risks posed by more powerful AI systems, including cybersecurity threats, misuse and the possibility that models could help develop still more capable technology.

Trump has dismissed calls for sweeping new federal rules, saying aggressive regulation could slow U.S. innovation and benefit China. His administration has instead emphasized expanding AI infrastructure, promoting private-sector development and deploying the technology across government services.

The executive order would not itself create a new regulatory framework for the industry.
