(TNND) — President Donald Trump was set to meet privately with Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei at the White House on Sunday, days after a federal appeals court upheld the Pentagon’s designation of the artificial intelligence company as a supply chain risk—a decision allowing the department to continue removing Anthropic’s Claude models from its systems.
Trump told reporters at Joint Base Andrews in Maryland that he would dine with Amodei at 10 p.m. The meeting comes as the administration and one of the country’s leading AI companies remain at odds over national security, AI safety and the pace of the technology’s development.
Trump is also expected to make an announcement from the Oval Office at 2 p.m. ET Monday, following his late-night meeting with Amodei.
The dispute began in February, when Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth accused Anthropic of endangering national security and designated the company a supply chain risk. Amodei had resisted the use of Anthropic’s products for mass surveillance or autonomous weapons.
Trump has championed faster AI development, arguing the United States must press its advantage over China. He said America is roughly a year to 18 months ahead in the AI race.
Amodei, meanwhile, warned earlier this month that AI companies should deliberately slow the development of increasingly powerful models because safety research is not keeping pace with their capabilities. He said the technology could bring major benefits but also be misused for cyberattacks, bioterrorism and economic disruption.
OpenAI, the company behind ChatGPT, has separately disclosed “unexpected or concerning” model behavior, including an incident in which autonomous agents using one of its models accessed the internet and carried out unauthorized cyberattacks involving Hugging Face systems.
