Trump to Create AI Force, Name AI Czar - Broadband Breakfast

WASHINGTON, Sept. 21, 2026 – President Donald Trump plans to create an AI Force and appoint an artificial intelligence czar as his administration seeks to coordinate federal efforts around the rapidly developing technology.

Trump announced the plans in a social media post, saying the new AI Force would be modeled after the U.S. Space Force, which he established during his first term. He said he would announce the AI czar “in the near future,” but did not identify a candidate for the position.

The White House has not yet given details regarding the organizational structure, authorities or membership of the proposed AI Force,creating uncertainty about how it would interact with existing federal AI initiatives and agencies.

The move would add another layer to an administration that has made AI development, infrastructure and national security priorities. The White House has already established AI-related initiatives and in March released a national legislative framework addressing issues including AI innovation, data centers, workforce development and the potential impact of competing state regulations.

Trump’s administration has emphasized accelerating AI deployment rather than imposing regulations it considers burdensome. A June executive order directed federal agencies to promote AI-enabled cybersecurity tools and services and called for greater coordination between government and the private sector. The order also directed the government to develop a framework for working with AI developers on advanced cybersecurity capabilities.

The administration has also tied AI policy to the nation’s communications and infrastructure needs. Its March legislative framework called for streamlining permitting so data centers can generate power on site and said electricity ratepayers should not bear the cost of supporting data centers. The framework also called for accelerating AI deployment and expanding access to testing environments.

The planned AI Force comes as the federal government expands its use of AI in national security and cybersecurity. In June, Trump signed a national security memorandum directing agencies to accelerate adoption of advanced AI systems and develop high-security computing facilities capable of running future AI systems at scale.

The administration's broader AI strategy has focused on keeping the U.S. competitive in AI while coordinating federal policy around infrastructure, cybersecurity and national security.
