Google DeepMind launches the DeepMind Institute to study AGI's societal impact

Google DeepMind launched the DeepMind Institute (DMI) on 16 September 2026 as a new interdisciplinary research platform examining the economic and societal impact of artificial general intelligence (AGI). The institute is directed by Shane Legg, James Manyika and Demis Hassabis, with Legg as managing editor. DMI creates a space for researchers and thinkers from Google DeepMind, Google and the wider global research community to publish and debate deeply informed ideas about a world with AGI, covering safety, governance, human flourishing and the institutions and policies society may need to reimagine.

Why it matters: The launch comes as Google DeepMind says the field is approaching AGI, a system exhibiting all the cognitive capabilities of the human brain, and that while AI could unlock a golden age of scientific discovery - in understanding and curing disease, developing clean energy and increasing economic prosperity - it also brings challenges and risks, including implications for cybersecurity and biorisks, and the potential for loss of control in future self-improving systems. The institute is designed to broaden that debate beyond technologists, bringing in the arts and humanities and governments to help ensure AGI benefits everyone. It launched alongside opening essays on reasoning transparency, economic policy for AGI, principles for a new utopianism and a framework for frontier AI.
