In the dial-up days, Wiley offered Internet training to local businesses and made house calls to set up home computers, he said in a news release. In 1997, he served as Marshall’s first webmaster and chaired the Electronic Publishing Oversight Committee, helping set policies around intellectual property and online courses.

Wiley went on to earn a doctorate in instructional psychology and technology from Brigham Young University and hold faculty positions in educational technology. In 2013, he ventured into the private sector, co-founding online courseware platform Lumen Learning and serving as the company’s chief academic officer for more than 12 years.

He made his way back to Marshall in 2025 as an associate professor of management information systems.

As chief AI officer — a relatively new role that has become more common at higher education institutions since generative AI’s boom in 2022 — Wiley will be tasked with balancing innovation, academic integrity, privacy and misinformation, according to the news release.

“If you’re a learner, the learning opportunities you have access to today far surpass anything that has ever been available before. The same holds true for instructors and researchers,” Wiley said in a public statement. “We all need to completely reset our expectations and beliefs about what is possible.”

His appointment is the latest in a series of moves by the university to establish institutional strategy for responsible AI use.

In 2023, Marshall established an AI task force that has vetted AI tools and shared recommendations, resources and training. The school has also offered workshops and free microcredentials in AI.

“As our inaugural chief academic AI officer, Dave Wiley will help ensure that we move forward ethically and responsibly, preparing every student to thrive in an AI-enabled world while preserving the human relationships, sound judgment and academic integrity at the heart of a Marshall education,” Marshall President Brad D. Smith said in a public statement.
