OpenAI is joining forces with its rivals Anthropic and Googleâs (GOOGL) DeepMind to address artificial intelligence safety issues. The companies are increasing joint efforts to respond to growing public concern over economic and security risks from frontier AI models. Chris Lehane, global policy chief at OpenAI, noted that talks with Anthropic and Google DeepMind have been under way for several weeks.
Lehane noted that companies do not need a special trade pass to work together on basic safety rules. Comparing the plan to safety rules used by airlines, Lehane said airline firms often work together to protect people. Fear over big tech risks grew after Anthropic head Dario Amodei asked to slow down work on advanced models so teams can study potential dangers. Amodeiâs warning drew support from OpenAI chief Sam Altman and SpaceXâs (SPCX) CEO Elon Musk.
OpenAI Backs AI Safety Laws
While meeting with lawmakers in Washington, Lehane said OpenAI supports two-party plans to stop major AI dangers. OpenAI likes a national rule plan set up by Representative Jay Obernolte and Representative Lori Trahan. The company is also open to a Senate plan led by John Thune, Ted Cruz, and Amy Klobuchar to handle new tech risks.
Senator Jim Banks and Senator Adam Schiff also suggested a new law to help AI firms share warning signs. This rule would let tech companies warn each other about lost control over AI models and cyber attacks without breaking trade laws. However, lawmakers are running out of time before the House leaves Washington for the fall elections. With President Donald Trump speaking out against new AI limits and calling delay efforts a hoax, Congress is not expected to pass new AI safety laws this year.
