Former Google DeepMind researcher raises a new warning about AI risk

Alphabet Inc. (GOOGL, Financials), the parent of Google and DeepMind, is being pulled deeper into a growing debate over how quickly advanced AI should move.

Bilal Chughtai, a former DeepMind research engineer who worked on AI safety and alignment, said he believes AI could potentially kill us all and that time to prevent such an outcome may be running short. Chughtai left DeepMind in July. His warning does not stand alone.

Anthropic researcher Jacob Coxon recently resigned partly over similar concerns. Anthropic scientist Evan Hubinger later said he believes there is a greater than 10% chance AI could kill all humans within the next decade.

The increasingly public warnings are creating an uncomfortable split inside the AI industry.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has called for slowing the pace of advanced AI development. Elon Musk and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman have also backed some form of pacing, while President Donald Trump has dismissed the push for more regulation.

For Alphabet investors, none of this changes Google's AI business overnight.

But if warnings from researchers inside leading labs keep growing, the debate could move from Silicon Valley into regulation.

That is where it could start affecting how quickly companies such as Google can develop and deploy their most advanced models.
