Flagstaff man accused of possessing AI-generated child porn asks court to overturn law - Arizona Daily Sun

A Flagstaff resident arrested in June and accused of possessing sexually explicit images of minors created using generative artificial intelligence (AI) tools has filed a motion challenging the Arizona law that specifically criminalized such images last year.

Shawn Roberts faces 10 counts of sexual exploitation of a minor in Coconino County Superior Court, each a Class 2 felony. The images Roberts allegedly possessed, which were the basis for the indictment, were created or modified with the use of AI, according to multiple sources. Under an amendment to Arizona law passed last year, sexually explicit images that are “indistinguishable from an actual minor,” including those created or modified using AI, are legally treated the same as actual child pornography.
