Leaders Convene at 2026 Power and AI Initiative Research Summit - Harvard University

The 2026 Power and AI Initiative Research Summit recently brought together leaders from academia, industry, government, and the technology sector to examine the rapidly evolving relationship between artificial intelligence and our modern power systems at the Harvard John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS). The program featured panel discussions, research presentations, and strategic conversations centered on how artificial intelligence is reshaping energy demand, generation, transmission, resilience, and operational efficiency. Led by SEAS faculty co-directors Prof. Le Xie and Prof. Minlan Yu, the Power and AI Initiative is building a collaborative ecosystem of experts to accelerate solutions in the field.

Throughout the research summit, participants emphasized the growing demand for scalable and reliable energy systems. Discussions explored how utilities, researchers, and policymakers can work together to ensure power infrastructure keeps pace with increasing computational demands while supporting sustainability and long-term reliability goals. The summit also underscored a recognition across sectors that the future of artificial intelligence and the future of energy infrastructure are becoming increasingly interconnected.

Key themes throughout the summit included grid resilience, energy security, data center growth, clean energy integration, predictive analytics, and the role of AI in optimizing power distribution and infrastructure planning. Many participants discussed the importance of responsible implementation, including safety and cybersecurity considerations, regulatory frameworks, and equitable access to emerging technologies.

Presentations also highlighted workforce development needs and the importance of multidisciplinary training, including remarks from Lene V. Hau, Mallinckrodt Professor of Physics and of Applied Physics and Academic Dean for Education at SEAS. Prof. Hau shared details about Harvard’s commitment to these efforts and highlighted Harvard’s new undergraduate concentration in “Energy, Climate, and the Environment,” which is a solutions-focused program of unprecendented scope and scheduled for launch in the 2026-2027 academic year. Prof. Hau added that topics discussed at the summit represent major components of the new progam.

The 2026 Power and AI Initiative Research Summit concluded with a commitment from the initiative’s leadership to continue creating opportunities for researchers, industry experts, policymakers, and technology leaders to convene, collaborate, and exchange ideas. In a joint statement, Prof. Xie and Prof. Yu emphasized that “Harvard is demonstrating leadership in shaping frontier issues at the intersection of power systems and artificial intelligence. This work is crucial to addressing a critical challenge facing the nation and the world, and it calls for rigorous scholarship, education, and sustained collaboration. Through the Power and AI Initiative at SEAS, Harvard and its growing ecosystem of partners aim to build strong academia-industry partnerships that advance resilient, reliable, and sustainable energy systems for the AI era.”
