AI use grows at work, but trust and productivity questions remain

SEATTLE — Artificial intelligence is becoming an increasingly significant part of the workplace, from composing emails and analyzing data to automating routine tasks.

As more companies embrace AI, questions remain about how it is being utilized, whether employees trust it, and how to ensure it enhances rather than hinders productivity.

Dr. James Atkinson, vice president of thought leadership at the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), discussed new research on AI in the workplace, including how adoption has evolved over the past year and what that has meant for day-to-day work.

The research found that less than half of U.S. workers are using AI on the job, raising questions about what is holding some employees back from using the tools.

The report also highlights a term described as “AI slop,” and examines why employers and workers should pay attention to it as AI-generated content becomes more common in workplace tasks.

For employers looking to encourage AI use, the research points to the need for policies and safeguards designed to keep work accurate and high-quality as AI tools are integrated into workflows.

The findings also address concerns that AI could replace jobs and explore how workers should think about AI’s role in their careers, along with what the research suggests is the biggest misconception people still have about using AI in the workplace.
