FDA Advisers Back Looser Rules For Six Peptides, Reject One (1) - Bloomberg Law News

An FDA advisory committee advanced recommendations for six popular peptides to be legally compounded and sold by pharmacies, rejecting only one substance for looser manufacturing restrictions championed by US Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.

The agencyâs outside advisers sitting on the Pharmacy Compounding Advisory Committee on Friday only declined to reclassify the peptide Emideltide as a substance that pharmacies would be allowed to legally market. The unapproved product is being evaluated for its use for opioid withdrawal and insomnia.

However, in votes Thursday and Friday, the majority of the committee agreed to recommend the unapproved peptides for compounding: Epitalon for insomnia, Semax for cerebral ischemia, BPC-157 for inflammation, KPV and TB-500 for wound healing, and MOTs-C for obesity.

The panel has been criticized for being filled with industry-favored advisers, though additional seats were added at the eleventh hour. Most of the votes contrast with the advice of the FDAâs own staff, who said there isnât enough evidence for the changes.

âItâs impossible for me to not take the FDAâs recommendations at heart with respect to safety and efficacy,â said Kevin Zacharoff, a clinical assistant professor at Stony Brook University, who voted no to Emideltide.

Melissa Loseke, the chief medical officer for Re-new Institute, said she voted yes to recommending Emideltide based on the evidence provided and because there is âa legitimate role in individualized patient care that FDA products do not fully serve at this time.â

While the Food and Drug Administration has a final say on whether the select peptides can be compounded, the agency traditionally weighs the committeeâs advice to make its decision.

Peptides are short chains of amino acids that act as building blocks of proteins, orchestrating a range of biological functions that can help with weight loss, sleep, and aging. The FDA is currently reviewing a decision from 2023 by Biden administration that restricted compounding certain peptides because there werenât enough human safety studies.

The FDA panel is scheduled to review in February five more unapproved peptides for pharmacy compounding.

There is no exact figure for how many people have accessed unapproved peptides, but some manufacturers and clinics have found that more than 20 million doses of the nominated substances were dispensed or administered in the last eight years â paving the way for a multibillion-dollar industry.
