MOBILE, Ala. (WALA) - Meta is facing growing criticism over a new artificial intelligence feature that can use Instagram users’ photos in AI-generated images by default.
The Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) warned members this week that “Meta now lets anyone use your Instagram photos in AI images without your consent,” urging them to opt out of the tool, called Muse Image, and “take action to protect your likeness.”
Muse Image, integrated into Instagram, allows users to generate AI photos much like posting a regular selfie or travel picture, which the system then turns into what Meta calls “high-quality visuals.” But the tool can also draw on photos from any public Instagram account and let people prompt the chatbot to create AI images based on those posts.
According to Meta’s help center, if an account is public and users do not change their settings, “people may be able to create content with your Instagram content using AI features at Meta.” Reports indicate users are not notified when their images are used in this way.
The feature has sparked a wave of concern online, with critics calling it an invasion of privacy and another example of technology companies repurposing personal data without clear consent.
Instagram users can opt out by changing their settings to restrict how their images are used in AI tools. However, Meta says there is currently no way to prevent audio, text and comments on the platform from being reused for AI features.
How to Turn Off Sharing
Go into your settings and look for this option that says sharing and reuse. Then you’re gonna scroll down and find this option that says allow people to reuse your content on Instagram and with AI features at Meta. Make sure that is toggled off for your posts and your reels.
