It shows a fake version of Cooke speaking into a microphone, while an AI-generated image of former President Joe Biden pops up in the periphery.\nThe AI version of Cooke says she’s running for Congress to “take advantage of as much corruption as possible and give every illegal alien free healthcare.”\nThat, the letter says, is “pure fiction.”\n“Ms. Cooke never made the statements attributed to her,” attorney Ben Stafford wrote on Sept. 30. “You are airing this false content to attempt to fool the voters of Wisconsin into believing she said something she did not to harm her reputation for your own political gain.”\nThe letter suggests that, by sharing the videos, Van Orden risks running afoul of state law that prohibits a public figure from acting with “actual malice” to defame someone. In 2024, Cooke won the Democratic primary for that seat, but lost to Van Orden in the general election by about 3 percentage points.\nOn social media this week, Van Orden responded to the cease-and-desist letter with another Grok-assisted video.\nThe short clip includes a red AI-generated duck.\n“Cease and desist!” the duck exclaims.\nWisconsin Public Radio, © Copyright 2026, Board of Regents of the University of Wisconsin System and Wisconsin Educational Communications Board.","image_url":"https://www.wpr.org/wp-content/uploads/2026/08/cookevanorden-1.jpg","lang":"en","published_at":"2026-10-01T17:18:09+00:00","fetched_at":"2026-10-01T22:15:05+00:00","status":"read","starred":0,"extract_state":"ok","summary_auto":"Attorneys for congressional candidate Rebecca Cooke have sent a cease-and-desist letter to U.S. Derrick Van Orden, R- Prairie du Chien, over Van Orden’s use of deepfake videos.","cluster_id":null,"extract_retries":0,"extract_error":null,"contract_version":"news_item.v1","format_contract_version":"news_item_formats.v1","dedup_url":"https://www.wpr.org/news/cooke-cease-and-desist-letter-van-orden-ai-deepfakes","quality_profile":{"profile_version":"extraction_quality.v2","bucket":"high","confidence":0.9,"failure_kind":"none","retryable":false,"retry_after_attempts":0,"reason":"High confidence: full text extraction produced 3791 characters.","operator_guidance":{"severity":"ok","recommended_action":"trust_full_text","next_step":"Use the extracted full text as the primary article source.","operator_label":"Ready","can_retry":false,"can_use_summary":false,"diagnostics_required":false},"content_depth":{"contract_version":"content_depth.v1","category":"full_text","label":"Full text","has_full_text":true,"has_summary":true,"content_length":3791,"summary_length":176,"usable_text_length":3791,"source_field":"content"},"legacy_collapsed":false,"signals":{"extract_state":"ok","extract_error":null,"extract_retries":0,"content_length":3791,"summary_length":176}},"news_item":{"id":94367,"canonical_url":"https://www.wpr.org/news/cooke-cease-and-desist-letter-van-orden-ai-deepfakes","source_url":"https://www.wpr.org/news/cooke-cease-and-desist-letter-van-orden-ai-deepfakes","title":"Cooke campaign sends cease-and-desist to Congressman Van Orden over AI deepfakes - WPR","source_name":"WPR","author":null,"published_at":"2026-10-01T17:18:09+00:00","locale":"en","topic":"ai","tags":[],"rss_summary":"Cooke campaign sends cease-and-desist to Congressman Van Orden over AI deepfakes WPR","full_text":"Attorneys for congressional candidate Rebecca Cooke have sent a cease-and-desist letter to U.S. Rep.
