Probably just a coincidence, though.\nYet somehow, I'm not inclined to laugh. That the leader—ruler, really, at this point—of the most powerful nation on the planet can just whip out bizarre ideas like this and have them treated seriously is kind of frightening, isn't it?\nAnd it is being taken seriously, at least insofar as we can describe billionaire tech oligarchs lining up to say and do pretty much whatever it takes to keep juicing the share price as seriousness: A subsequent White House Accord on Super Intelligence was signed by a who's-who of people who have made PC gaming almost impossibly expensive:\n- Sundar Pichai (Google) \n- Dario Amodei (Anthropic) \n- Mark Zuckerberg (Meta) \n- Greg Brockman (OpenAI) \n- Elon Musk (XAI) \n- Jensen Huang (Nvidia) \nAnd yes, they actually misspelled United States as \"Unites States\" under Trump's signature. Real pros at work here, top men all around.\nMusk wasted no time publicly endorsing the rebranding on his X platform, although he was back to calling it AI less than eight hours later.\nHuang also signalled his obedience, referring to \"super intelligence\" no fewer than three times in his own X post.\nPichai, who was quick to acquiesce to Trump's demand to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario for US users of Google Maps, heaped praise on the heads of the administration while also trotting out the phrase.\nAnd of course so did Zuckerberg, but on his own Facebook platform: \"We believe superintelligence will create significant new opportunities for all people and businesses.\"\nHumiliating prostrations notwithstanding, the practical impact of renaming artificial intelligence is basically nil: Apart from White House sycophants and quisling MAGA press outlets, nobody's calling it that.\nBut the bigger-picture consequences may be more, well, consequential: The accord, signed shortly after all the techbro billionaires lined up dutifully in a show of support for the latest addition to the president's world-changing \"legacy,\" leaves the AI industry to regulate itself—\"tremendous self-regulation,\" as Trump put it.\nTo quote from the accord: \"In order to build a positive future for the American people and the world, we believe every company is responsible for developing its own technology safely and in a way that builds trust with customers and the public.\" It later states that \"participating companies will meet regularly to establish standards and best practices to improve the safety of their systems.\" No mention of regulatory oversight, or any government involvement at all, is made.\nAt least one big-name tech billionaire spoke out against the idea of self-regulation for the AI industry, although it bears remembering that he's not beholden to shareholders anymore.\n\"It's fair to say that outside of the industry, the awareness of the dangers of A.I. is extremely low,\" Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates told the New York Times. \"And you can say that of academia, you can say that of think tanks, you can say that of policymakers, politicians.\n\"And part of the reason I'm speaking so loudly—as loud as I can—is that you can't rely on the industry to self-regulate here. I mean, it's just insane.\"\nSo I guess, taking all that in, it's not really all that funny after all. But it sure is super.","confidence":0.9,"diagnostics_url":"/api/diagnose?url=https%3A//www.yahoo.com/news/politics/articles/americans-officially-renamed-artificial-intelligence-185758388.html","quality_bucket":"high","failure_kind":"none","retryable":false,"quality_reason":"High confidence: full text extraction produced 3975 characters.","quality_profile":{"profile_version":"extraction_quality.v2","bucket":"high","confidence":0.9,"failure_kind":"none","retryable":false,"retry_after_attempts":0,"reason":"High confidence: full text extraction produced 3975 characters.","operator_guidance":{"severity":"ok","recommended_action":"trust_full_text","next_step":"Use the extracted full text as the primary article source.","operator_label":"Ready","can_retry":false,"can_use_summary":false,"diagnostics_required":false},"content_depth":{"contract_version":"content_depth.v1","category":"full_text","label":"Full text","has_full_text":true,"has_summary":true,"content_length":3975,"summary_length":287,"usable_text_length":3975,"source_field":"content"},"legacy_collapsed":false,"signals":{"extract_state":"ok","extract_error":null,"extract_retries":0,"content_length":3975,"summary_length":287}},"tags":[],"format_contract_version":"news_item_formats.v1"}}}
