WASHINGTON (7News) — The Trump administration launched an artificial intelligence-powered website Tuesday to help people find federal information and services in one place, a move a Virginia Tech professor said could show Americans a practical use for the rapidly developing technology.

America.gov is designed to answer questions in plain language and help users navigate services spread across federal agencies. A White House order calls for broader integration of government services with the site, where authorized and technically available.
Cayce Myers, a public relations professor and director of graduate studies at Virginia Tech’s School of Communication, told 7News anchor Megan Clarke that the rollout offers the White House an opportunity to emphasize AI’s potential benefits amid concerns about data centers and job displacement.
Myers said a tool that helps people get answers from a complex federal system could make AI more useful in their daily lives. He also said the pace of AI development challenges lawmakers considering safeguards.
“Law is always going to lag behind technological development because tech development just operates at a faster speed than lawmakers can kind of keep up with,” Myers said.
The question, he said, is how to address issues such as privacy, intellectual property and AI safeguards without discouraging innovation. Myers also asked whether industry or government is best equipped to set the rules.

Myers said the technology is growing more complex and its effects will remain a subject of debate as the new portal rolls out.
