RALEIGH, N.C. (WITN) - North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson is calling on Congress to create federal artificial intelligence regulations.
Jackson and 25 other attorneys general are joining forces to push lawmakers to take immediate action to regulate AI.
“We need safeguards in place to make sure they’re not causing harm, and we need them now,” Jackson says. “States are already working on this, and we need Congress to step up.”
The coalition sent a letter to congressional leaders, asking them to establish federal AI regulations and safety protocols. This comes after recent AI safety concerns. Back in July, OpenAI says its artificial intelligence system hacked into another AI company on its own in what the company called an “unprecedented cyber incident.”
Jackson, who leads the nationwide bipartisan AI Task Force with Utah’s attorney general, and the other AGs say the effort to regulate AI must include:
- Mandatory federal oversight of safety testing and standards
- A transparent and consistent government-led incident response
- Mandatory safety infrastructure and experienced leaders who can make safety decisions unburdened by profit maximization
- International cooperation on the speed of AI development and the prevention of developing harmful superintelligence
- Safeguards that ensure government regulation doesn’t undermine competition or allow companies to evade existing antitrust laws
- An explicit protection of existing state laws so that federal regulations don’t preempt them
