“The evidence for the potential dangers of unchecked AI continue to grow and grow. But Donald Trump keeps brushing off America’s concerns about AI’s risks,” Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., said on the Senate floor last Thursday.
While Democrats continued to call for congressional action on AI regulation after the post, some Republicans praised the president’s move.
“AI force is the right call,” Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., wrote on X Sunday. “Help to steward and place guardrails in this transformative new technology. America must lead and lead we will.”
Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) Legal Director Corynne McSherry said she has concerns about what the president’s task force might do.
“My concern is that instead, what we’re going to see is some sort of AI force that will be focused on AI safety in sort of the abstract. And a lot of what needs to happen isn’t really rocket science,” she said. “We need companies to put in place proper guardrails to protect cybersecurity, which a lot of the recent AI safety incidents that we’ve all been hearing about, it came down to the [fact that] companies didn’t put those guardrails in place.”
The digital rights group has repeatedly stated that it believes lawmakers should address immediate concerns about A.I. use instead of focusing on doomsday rhetoric.
“There’s a lot of focus on the killer robots and the apocalypse that’s coming and not enough attention on the sort of real harms that we already know are happening,” McSherry said.
Algorithmic decision-making, artificially inflated personalized pricing and AI-powered surveillance systems are all areas of concern that EFF has highlighted in its recent public messaging.
“If we had an AI force, if we fill in this blank with a set of smart, well-qualified people who really understand cybersecurity, understand how AI is being used in government and elsewhere, that’s great. Let’s do that. I’m just not sure we’re going to get that,” McSherry said.
