MARIETTA, Ohio (WTAP) - As artificial intelligence becomes an inescapable presence in modern education, Marietta City Schools is taking a proactive approach to bring the technology into local classrooms.
The district has launched a pilot program with MagicSchool AI, a specialized platform designed specifically for K-12 education that emphasizes sensitive data privacy and instructional support. The software is available district-wide to all educators and students.
District leaders noted that data security was a top priority when selecting the platform. Unlike open commercial generative AI models, the educational platform is built to prevent user information from being shared or monetized.
“This platform, they work with schools and in the education field primarily,” said Christian Hudspeth, communications coordinator with Marietta City Schools. “They have their AI platform and all that data, like I said, is protected that way, we don’t have to worry about data being sold to other organizations or whatever the case may be.”
Rather than attempting to ban artificial intelligence or enforce restrictive policies, administrators view the initiative as a way to build practical digital literacy skills.
“AI is here and it’s a reality for students and educators alike,” Hudspeth said. “We like the idea of getting out front and being proactive, showing students that they can use it as a tool rather than completely using it to subvert their education. There are a number of creative ways that students can use it. And one of the things we like about it is it’s integrated within the curriculum we’re using.”
Early feedback from educators across the district has been positive. Teachers have utilized the platform’s tools to streamline routine tasks such as grading and to develop customized lesson plans.
“I do know, from sitting in on some of the professional development, that some of the teachers were excited about some of the capabilities they could use it for,” Hudspeth noted. “And looking at other creative ways they can use it in the future. Feedback has been nothing but positive so far.”
The pilot program will continue throughout the remainder of the school year. District administrators plan to evaluate performance metrics and user feedback before deciding whether to establish a permanent, long-term partnership.
