RALEIGH, N.C. — From writing papers to preparing for the workplace, artificial intelligence is changing how students learn and work.
“We have such a like rich environment here in higher ed across our state, in such a variety of institutions serving such a variety of needs,” said UNC Faculty Director of AI Literacy, Data Science and AI Academy Meghan Manfra.
Now, students across the UNC System can take a course designed to help them understand and responsibly use the technology.
“It is a series of modules that students have free and freely available to them, where they can work their way through and starting with, with a foundational understanding of AI. And then, like you said, the ethical responsible use and then connecting AI tools into the workflows in an appropriate way for their field or discipline or major,” Manfra said.
The course is called “Foundational Generative AI Literacy and Responsible Use,” and it officially launched last spring. The course was developed by 15 faculty members, but after a few adjustments based on student feedback, the course is back this fall.
“We did a sprint of six weeks design of the course, which was amazing to pull those people together so quickly. Now the universities each have access to it through their learning management systems and really have a lot of sort of leeway in how they choose to share it with their students,” Manfra said.
The course covers the basics of how generative AI works, how students might use it in school or on the job and the technology’s benefits and drawbacks. But it’s not one-size-fits-all. Different modules are tailored to different fields.
“I think what we ended up being able to do is really engage in sort of thoughtful approach to creating a course that will meet the needs of a variety of stakeholders,” Manfra said.
UNC System President Peter Hans called the project a significant milestone, saying it prepares students to engage thoughtfully and responsibly with artificial intelligence. The UNC System says the goal is to give students a shared foundation for using AI, no matter what they study or which of the system’s 17 universities they attend.
