JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) - As the fall semester approaches once again, there is one thing that education is struggling to balance: artificial intelligence, and what is more harmful and more helpful about the rising tool.
According to a study from Campbell Academic Technology Services, studies from 2024-2025 indicated that roughly 90% of college students used A.I. large language models (LLMs), like Claude, ChatGPT, and Google’s Gemini. These models analyze and collect data on human interactions via what users type into available search engines.
Amid their rising popularity, Justin Carothers, Arkansas State University’s senior director of Academic Technology and Data Analysis, said that the university is not ignoring it.
“We’re trying not to pretend that AI doesn’t exist and that we want to be ... We want to welcome it in a responsible way,” Carothers said.
That responsibility includes transparency on when — and how — A.I. tools are used by Arkansas State staff and faculty and providing guidelines for students on how to use A.I. as a tool, not as a replacement for human work, which is defined in their policy as a violation of academic dishonesty.
Carothers said that A.I. should be “working with you,” in opposition of submitting the work in someone’s stead with no oversight.
He said that A.I. can be useful as a research and study tool, as the university has already seen success with artificial intelligence in those regards.
But he warned that there is a difference between using A.I. as a tool versus as a crutch. He used the example of asking these models about mundane things, like when to schedule an appointment during a busy day, to make the point that at a certain point, people can become reliant on the technology.
“It sounds kind of silly when you say it out loud,” Carothers said. “But I think that that that is sort of an example of runway A.I. You know, if we lose that ability to think for ourselves.”
In the end, Carothers said he would like to see A.I. be integrated into society with humanity, because he said he thinks that A.I. will never be better at creating than people.
“Honestly, humans are the ultimate creative, and I don’t think you can replace that with a machine,” Carothers said.
