NEW ORLEANS (WVUE) - President Donald Trump expanded his pledge aimed at ensuring AI data centers do not raise electricity bills for Americans. Louisiana Gov. Jeff Landry and Entergy CEO Drew Marsh attended the White House event.
“With the Trump Administration’s Ratepayer Protection Plan the American innovators and consumers strive to win together because we’re insisting that AI data centers and big tech companies pay their own way,” Trump said.
Landry stood on the podium with Trump.
“The president’s instructions are simple: Companies must build, bring or buy the generation they need, negotiate separate rate structures and fully fund the grid upgrades to support their operations,” Landry said.
Meta is building a mega AI data center in Richland Parish.
“As new data centers go up and they’re going up all over, electricity bills for American families will actually come down,” Trump said.
Marsh also spoke at the White House event.
“Fair Share Plus pledge also means that Meta covers its entire incremental costs during the contract and it means it covers fixed costs, in part, their fair fixed costs that other customers are paying today. Things like storm costs and resilience investment,” Marsh said.
Entergy has signed the pledge.
A utility watchdog is not convinced Meta’s data center will lead to lower electricity bills for Louisiana customers.
“The fact of the matter is a pledge isn’t worth the ink it’s signed with,” said Logan Burke, executive director of the Alliance for Affordable Energy. “It has no force of law, and the only people who have the authority to ensure that ratepayers in our state are protected are our regulators.”
Marsh spoke of savings he said will come to Entergy customers.
“Our Fair Share Plus Pledge is modeled after the Ratepayer Protection Pledge that the administration put in place. And it will deliver approximately 7 billion dollars of benefits to customers over the next two decades,” he said.
Burke said, “I want to be really clear about what Entergy is talking about when they use a number like $7 billion. That number is their calculation of savings or benefits to their customer in Louisiana and Mississippi and Arkansas and Texas. This is not Entergy’s pledge to Louisiana,” she said.
Entergy plans to build seven new natural gas-fueled power plants.
“We are going to be encouraging the Public Service Commission to slow this down and to not approve absolutely everything in one go. We need to make sure that residents don’t get left holding all of the risk and all of the cost,” Burke said.
She said the Public Service Commission has matters before it related to Entergy’s plans.
“What is before the Public Service Commission right now, as it relates to META, is a roughly $17 billion investment in seven new gas plants, in transmission, in energy storage. And the Public Service Commission is being asked to green light this nearly $17 billion investment that will be paid off over the course of decades. We have very little insight into how META expects to operate this data center. And that’s what really matters here,” said Burke.
Trump said data centers will have electricity left over that will be put into the grid.
