BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) - Sen. Tommy Tuberville said artificial intelligence is already present in American schools and that Alabama students should be taught how it works, why it matters, and how to use it responsibly.
Tuberville, the Republican candidate for Alabama governor, said some Alabama schools have already opted into AI training programs.
Federal push for AI literacy
Last year, President Trump signed an executive order making AI literacy an official priority in K-12 schools. The U.S. Department of Education followed by directing schools on how to use federal dollars to implement AI education.
“We’ve got to teach our kids in the classroom because they’re going to learn it regardless,” Tuberville said. “We want Alabama students to be the best and the brightest in the country; training them on AI is the least we can do to prepare them for the ever-changing technology landscape.”
What it looks like in the classroom
Educators are currently encouraged to teach students how to use AI responsibly, ethically, and with academic integrity. Tuberville said teacher training is a key component of the effort.
“We want to train our teachers, and then we want to start teaching at our schools at a young age,” he said.
AI will not replace teachers
Lawmakers and educators agree that AI should not replace teachers, saying the technology is only as good as the teachers guiding it.
“We want to make sure that our students can tell what’s fake and what’s real. That’s what learning through these programs and starting at a young age does,” Tuberville said.
He also cautioned that foundational knowledge must come first.
“But you have to remember this, learn the basics first, learn the ethics first, because it could be used the wrong way,” Tuberville said.
How AI will be used in Alabama classrooms is still taking shape as the technology continues to evolve. The Alabama State Department of Education and local school boards have not yet responded to requests for comment on how AI will be incorporated in the coming school year.
